Let us also read 5:6, which says, And I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and in the midst of the elders a Lamb. This verse clearly says that the seven lamps are the seven Spirits of God. THE SEVEN CHURCHES AND THE SEVEN SPIRITS The Seven Spirits of God are a revelation of the seven dimensions of operation of Spirit of God. Seven lights of fire were burning before the throne. Forgive me for not turning to you in your nearness. Revelation 4:5b says, There were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. 5 Lightning and noise and thunder came from the throne. As it is written: 'The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD, and He will delight in the fear of the Lord.' Isaiah 11:23 (NASB). Forgive me for not seeking your presence. In one interpretation, the 'Seven Spirits' represent the sevenfold ministry of the Spirit as depicted in the Book of Isaiah. You are our Eternal Father, Sacrificial Son, and All-Present Spirit. God Almighty, you are present with us and for us. The seven Spirits of God are not yet another Spirit but the Spirit of God, the life-giving Spirit, the consummated Spirit, who in the book of Revelation has been intensified sevenfold due to the degradation of the church. Think of it: God is still with us and among us and for us, empowering us through the perfect presence of the Holy Spirit! Today's Prayer The Holy Spirit is God fully present for us personally and in the churches. Jesus is the Messiah, is our Lord and ruler as well as the perfect sacrifice for us. The Holy Spirit is the full perfection of God who is with us, in us, and for us (sevenfold Spirit or seven spirits). God is always and perfectly present with us (is, was, is to come, Revelation 1:8). Personally, I believe that John is including the nature of God that is sometimes referred to as the Trinity. ![]() That is, since the number seven in the Bible represents perfection, the designation could refer to the perfect Spirit that the churches need, or it could refer to the spirits of the angels of the seven churches. Revelation 3:1 From the throne came flashes of lightning rumblings and peals of thunder, Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. The seven burning torches mentioned in this verse probably symbolizes seven attributes of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2–3), perhaps connected to the reference John made to seven spirits in Revelation 1:4.Bible students have wondered and sometimes debated whether the "sevenfold Spirit" means the Holy Spirit or the seven spirits before the throne. To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. The flashes of lightning and thunder in Revelation 4:5 may also indicate that God is all powerful, authoritative, and greatly opposed to sin. While God and Christ are obviously the center of the narrative, the Holy Spirit receives worship and bestows grace, has a place on God’s throne, and acts as the agent of revelation as John enters the heavenly. ![]() It seems in view of this Mount Sinai event that lightning and thunder are signs that no one is allowed to approach God without His permission. In this brief survey, we have seen that John uses seven spirits language to talk about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. At the same time, God set limits around the mountain and told Moses to command the people not to break through to look (Exodus 19:21–23). He who has athe seven spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, and yet you are dead. This phenomenon caused the Israelites below the mountain to tremble. 1 Corinthians 12:411 The Number Seven in Revelation The number seven in the Revelation is seen frequently. Exodus 19:16 informs us that thunder and lightning occurred on Mount Sinai when God came down to give Moses the Ten Commandments. He tells us further that the burning torches are the seven spirits of God. He also saw seven burning torches before the throne. While enigmatic, the symbolic use of the number seven in Revelation gives credible explanation: The seven spirits are God is a reference to the Holy Spirit, who is the perfect and complete Spirit of God. John tells us in this verse that he saw flashes of lightning and heard rumblings and peals of thunder. In the book of Revelation John speaks of the seven spirits of God (1:4 3:1 4:5 5:6). ![]()
